In 1968, President Lyndon Johnson established a week that honored Americans whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. In 1988, President Reagan enacted a law expanding the week to a whole month, National Hispanic Heritage Month.

September 15 through October 15 was chosen as the time frame for this celebration for a few reasons. The Latin American countries of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua celebrate independence on September 15th, Mexico on September 16, and Chile on September 18. Additionally, Día de la Raza (Columbus Day) is October 12.

During National Hispanic Heritage Month, we celebrate the histories, cultures, and contributions of American citizens of Hispanic ancestry. Learn more about it here: https://hispanicheritagemonth.gov/
